Finding a good Italian restaurant in the theater district doesn't have to be hard, it's just a matter of getting away from the usual tourist traps.  Proceed over to 9th Avenue and 47th Street and you'll find a tiny restaurant called Basilica.  This little restaurant is a gem and one that you'll want to visit again and again.

The bad news? There are only about 20 or 25 tables in the entire restaurant.  The good news?  They take reservations, which are highly recommended on weekends.  The best news?  There isn't anything bad on the menu!

From appetizers such as Mussels And Clams Fradiablo ($9.95) and classic Calamari Fritti ($11.95) to pasta dishes including Spaghetti Bolognese ($13.95) and Fettuccini Carbonara ($13.95) to meat dishes such as Veal Marsala ($17.95) to seafood delights like Linguini In White Or Red Clam Sauce ($15.95) you are sure to find something to satisfy your hunger at Basilica.

This restaurant is a true throw back to Mom and Pop operations that we all loved growing up.  The waiters are attentive and give excellent suggestions, and, the food is well cooked including the al dente pasta.  The atmosphere is very cozy, but, tables are close together.

Basilica is a great pre or post theater dining experience or just a great place to spend an evening with excellent (homemade quality) food.  You'll only be sorry if you don't try it!

By far the best Italian restaurant I've been to.  From its exterior it doesn't look like anything great, but once you walk in comes paradise.  It has such a cozy and romantic feeling to it - with its candles and exposed brick, but is still appropriate for friends and family.

The service here is 5 star.  The servers are so attentive and quick to refill your water / wine, clear away your dishes, answer your questions ... and best of all, the food is served quickly, and steaming hot!  Out of all the times I've been here, the food has been consistently good.  I love the paparadelle and shrimp with vodka, mussels, calamari and meatballs.

My husband and I have been here three times over a course of a few years (we don't live even remotely in the neighborhood), and have loved it every time!  The place is tiny (I can't imagine a party bigger than 6 fitting and there's only one table that could even handle that), but feels cozy that way!

I love this place because:
-The food is delicious!  Everything is good, but I highly recommend the Fettuccine Carbonaro.  The cream sauce is delicious and I had to catch myself before saying "this has way too much delicious, flavorful bacon" because it actually does have A LOT of bacon.  And for $13.95, you can't beat it.
- The service is fantastic including refills of water every 15 seconds (we were prepping for a half marathon the next day so this was clutch) and even more BREAD.
- They bring around free flights of amaretto (or maybe something else) at the end of your meal.  I poured mine in the cappuccino I ordered (genius!)

I'm in no position to be judging authenticity, so if you're looking for the scoop on that, don't ask me.  All I can say is this place is consistent, affordable (for New York City, but then again is that caveat even necessary any more?), and yummy.
